Rhys was Noshiko's boyfriend at the Oak Creek internment camp in 1943. He got caught up in a riot when the prisoners learned that the doctor was stealing medicine from them, and a Werewolf set him on fire.

 

Rhys died from his wounds in Eichen House and was going to be buried with Noshiko in a mass grave. When she called to the kitsune spirits to send down a nogitsune so she could take vengeance, the spirit inhabited Rhys instead. 

 

Noshiko ran him through with a special katana in order to kill the nogitsune.
